A project on Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Where nature meets beauty

Why is CVNP so special to the people of Ohio

A brief history of the park

Cuyahoga valley was originally designated as a national recreational area in 1974 then redesignated as a national park 26 years later in 2000 and remains the only national park that originated as a national recreational area.

The park is a refuge of flora and fauna, gives a sense of times past, and provides recreation and solitude for Ohio's residents and visitors. They tell of discovery, self-expression, hardship, gain, love and humor. Many stories were never recorded and have become lost or dimmed through time.

Remains of the Ohio and Erie Canal, which travelled through the valley in the 19th century and the early 20thcentury offers a glimpse into the history of how the country was transformed.

The Purpose of Our Project

Healing is Possible

Inspired by the mining at CVNP, our goal is to provide a way to exhibit that healing from trauma is foreseeable over time, for both the environment and one’s personal life.  We hope to create a physical space to allow viewers to be inspired by  the restoration work at CVNP, and apply that to their own mindsets,  leaving feeling refreshed.

We hope that this experience will resonate with viewers, and that the site’s restoration will act as a metaphor for personal healing.

Physical, emotional, and mental trauma can alter something forever, however with the correct support, positive change is possible.

Just like the park’s restoration, we are all capable of healing.

The Final Experience

Utilizing the blank lab in Kent State’s DI Hub, we decided to use a  three-panel, video version of a LiDAR scan to provide a “portal” to CVNP  on Kent’s campus.

Using text to guide our audience through the video experience, they will read about the trauma the park has endured.

Throughout our portal experience, the audience will feel connected to  the invasion of CVNP and can use those lessons in their personal lives  to strengthen mental health.
